Friday

Ponniyin Selvan

Friday is the conspirators’ announced deadline for a campaign against Sundara Chozhar and the Chozha dynasty. In their exchange, the day links a promised royal assassination to plans against other heirs, while leaving the throne temporarily open for a future Pandiya ruler.

A Fixed Day in the Conspiracy

The conspirators name Friday as the day Sundara Chozhar will die. One pledges to complete the mission; the other makes clear that carrying out the associated tasks is also essential. The date is therefore more than a prediction: it is presented as a deadline coordinating separate parts of a larger plot. The passage specifies no calendar date, so Friday functions as a relative time marker rather than an independently fixed point in the year.

Targets and Political Sequence

The conspiracy reaches beyond Sundara Chozhar. The speakers regard Adithan as the responsibility of Pazhuvoor Ilaiya Rani, and believe that Arulmozhi Varman is alive and hidden in Nagapattinam. They identify his protectors as being in Thanjavur and plan to send Kramavithan to destroy him. Their confidence that Arulmozhi Varman cannot escape stands in contrast to the uncertainty of his reported survival and whereabouts: the threat is definite, but the speakers’ account of their target is still based on what they believe.

The exchange also distinguishes immediate violence from the longer political design. Asked about Madhuranthaka Thevar, the conspirators say that he may live and that the Chozha throne may remain available for a while, until the Pandiya Chakravarthy comes of age. Friday thus marks an intended blow against the reigning dynasty, not an immediate attempt to install Madhuranthaka Thevar.

A Deadline, Not an Outcome

The passage establishes Friday through the conspirators’ plans and assurances; it does not, by itself, show that the threatened killings occur on that day. That distinction gives the time marker its force: it turns an expansive intention to destroy the dynasty into an imminent deadline, while preserving a gap between the conspirators’ certainty and what has actually happened. For the reader, Friday gathers the threatened death of Sundara Chozhar, the planned attack on Arulmozhi Varman, and the dynastic ambitions behind both into a single countdown.
